“Maybe once in a lifetime an animal like this appears and her mere presence seems to galvanize everything. An icon of motherhood. An emblem of wildness. A sentient creature who has taught us new ways to think about others of her kind. 399 summons us together at a time when so much of the natural world is at loose ends and falling apart.”
—Thomas D. Mangelsen
Grizzly 399 was a beloved momma bear roaming Teton National Park and Bridger-Teton National Forest. In May of 2020 she emerged from hibernation with her four cubs, her largest brood to date. This last Spring (2024) she emerged with a single cub, becoming the oldest bear ever known to reproduce. She is one of the oldest grizzlies around, born in 1996, and has reared at least 25 descendants - making her a grandmother and possibly a great grandmother. She is loved, respected and watched over by many near and far. On October 22nd she was struck by a vehicle & passed from her injuries. She will forever be remembered as the icon she is.
Offered as giclee fine art print, displaying a full color spectrum and capturing every shade with the sharpest detail.
